VLC
The VLC media player (formerly known as the VideoLAN Client and simply VLC) is a free and open-source, portable, cross-platform media player and streaming media server developed by the VideoLAN project. VLC is available for a variety of desktop and mobile platforms, including Android, iOS, and iPadOS. VLC can also be found via digital distribution platforms including Apple's App Store, Google Play, and Microsoft Store.
DVD-Video, video CD, and streaming protocols are among the audio and video compression methods and file formats supported by VLC. It can convert multimedia files and transmit media over computer networks.
In 1996, the VideoLan software began as a research project. When VLC was a client of the VideoLAN project, VLC stood for "VideoLAN Client." That initialization no longer applies because VLC is no longer only a client. It was supposed to be a client and server system that could stream videos from satellite dishes across a school network. Originally created by students at the École Centrale de Paris, it is presently being developed by people all around the world and is managed by VideoLAN, a non-profit organisation. In 1998, it was completely rewritten from the ground up.
With permission from the principal of the École Centrale Paris, it was published under the GNU General Public License on January 1, 2001. The server programme VideoLan Server (VLS) has been deprecated because much of its functionality has been absorbed by VLC. Because there is no longer a client/server infrastructure, the project name has been changed to VLC media player.
The traffic cone icon in VLC is a reference to the traffic cones gathered by the Networking Students' Association at École Centrale. In 2006, Richard iestad redesigned the cone icon from a low-resolution hand-drawn form to a higher-resolution CGI-rendered version.
